Tech Scheming

So, I'm not sure that anyone has read or will read this blog, and I'm thinking about putting a stats counter to measure the hits that I get. Also, the ads aren't generating any hits, so I'm wondering at this point how to atract hits. I'm also looking for a way to obtain a domain for a low price or free. I've got the web space, but I want to put up my website again. Once I do, this blog will redirect to a subdomain on that TLD. I'm thinking about doing tech support via phone, skype or email to people all around the country, starting out with blind but expanding. As this probably won't generate much income to begin with because connections have to be established first, I am also thinking of building customized desktops and selling those to anyone with Linux on them. I would sell to blind with screen reader and magnification support enabled by default, and probably a standard version of Ubuntu for nonblinks. If anyone reads this, can you please let me know what ideas you have about how to go about getting this implemented? It is going to take some funding to advertise, maintain the site, purchase hardware, etc etc but maybe there are some grants that I can apply for? I haven't done much research into all this yet. I also wouldn't need to advertise too much because word of mouth would get me enough clients. As long as I got my site search engine optimized, I should be OK. This is just an idea of mine that I'm throwing around, I don't know yet how it's going to take off. I don't see myself finding a job in this tight economy in the arena of assistive tech, although God always has his plans. If I do, then I'll be happy. But if I don't, then I have to have some plan for generating a cash flow, and this might be a way to do it. Unfrotunately all this is long-term ...

Check out thunderbolt!! This is a port going on the new macbook pro. As I understand it, it will allow you to connect existing devices via available adapters and achieve speeds of 10.00 GB of throughput in both directions. In addition, it will allow you to connect multiple devices simultaneously without the use of a hub or a switch, without sacrificing performance. Personally, I can't wait to see this out in all notebooks!! Please check this out!!

Shutdown of internet in Libya

Hello,

This blog post is not intended to dish out information. All information contained is of the opinion of the author.

I have been praying for my friends in Libya. It seems as if the government there is bombing its own people. This makes me real glad to be in the USA. It also appears as if they have cut off mobile and land line access, as well as all internet traffic. Egypt tried this, and this didn't work too well. There are ways around the blocks. A quick google search will show anyone how, although if internet is blocked it will be up to those outside of Libya to get in contact with people in Libya to inform them of how to do this. So, here's a question, and all comments are welcome: Should governments have access over ISP's and shutting down the internet? The United States has been talking about an internet kill switch, other countries obviously are now cutting off internet access any time they feel like it, and I haven't seen too many posts analyzing whether this is ssomething that ought to be done or not. In my opinion, the internet belongs to the people as a whole. It is not the United States' internet, or Egypt's internet, or Libya's internet. It blongs to all of us. When government cut off internet access, it makes the people who are affected double their efforts to make information available to the wider world and to access information that they lack. Do governments really believe that cutting off people's internet solves any of their problems? It only makes them look like the tyrants that they are.

Orca version 2.91.90pre released

Orca version 2.91.90pre has been released. I am running it here with no issues. Please follow the instructions for your distro to obtain and install orca. This release enhanced support for libreoffice and openoffice.org by reducing lock-ups and crashes. This version also made it so that if there is a screen reader running, it will autostart. Enjoy, and if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me!!

Increase your odds for a job in the tech field

With the economy down and jobs being hard to find, you have to do whatever it takes to get the edge up on most people. This is especially true in the tech industry because there are many people that are now entering the technosphere. Therefore, companies have to be able to distinguish between who is qualified and who isn't. In my experience, most jobs are obtained by networking and getting to know an employer. However, there are a few things that you can do. One of those things is to sit down and get an education. A degree in the field of IT, computer science or something similar helps out. Most employers though look for experience. They want to know that you did more than read a textbook, and that you can actually perform on the job. Certifications are a mixture of education and experience, and hence are a good way to get noticed by an employer. The Gild is a site that allows you to be able to take free certification tests. The site also has job boards, and other tools to aid you in your job search. Furthermore, they also have partnerships with companies such as ebay and Oracle, so big tech companies are looking at these cert results. When you take the test, results are put up on a public profile. They also have certs in writing, which is a vital skill in the workplace.

Vinux: A free and open-source Operating System!!

I began using Linux on and off in 2003. I've tried out Ubuntu, Knoppix, Open-Solaris, and Open-Suse. They all have accessibility in some way. They all incorporate the gnome desktop, and thus are able to use the Orca screen reader. However, it often took many work-arounds to get things working as they should. You might have to enable it to allow you to access administrative applications, you might have to install accessible applications to do some things because the app installed was not accessible or usable with orca, etc etc. Tony Sales recognized that there was a place out there for an accessible Linux Distrobution that would enable accessibility out of the box and would allow blind and visually impaired users to use it as an alternative to windows and mac. In windows, if someone wants to be truly productive, they have to buy a screen reader which costs $900 or above and was extremely buggy. If you wanted a mac, while accessibility was built in, the hardware is extremely expensive. Vinux, or visually impaired Linux which is now a variant of Ubuntu Linux enabled access to the entire operating system for blind and visually impaired individuals. It also does not need a very powerful machine to run. And it is possible to install Vinux without relying on someone's assistance right out of the box without using an automated script. Not only was Orca installed and configured and optimized for speed and efficiency, but other apps such as yasr (a screen reader for the terminal), thunderbird (an accessible email client) and firefox have been enabled and in some instances optimized to work even better for the blind individual. Also, high-contrast appearances and fonts were installed to improve its look for visually impaired individuals. Over the past couple of years, I have been using Linux and now Vinux full time. I head up the documentation team as well as the testing team. I urge everyone to at least take a look at this operating system. It is possible to run it from a CD, from a USB thumb drive, as a virtual operating system inside of windows, or you can install it on the hard drive alongside windows or on its own. Please click here to visit the vinux homepage and to find out more. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Ray Kurzweil Teams with Baker & Taylor on New eReader Software
By Calvin Reid -- Publishers Weekly, 10/15/2009 2:37:00 PM

Baker & Taylor announced a partnership with acclaimed scientist, inventor
and futurist Ray Kurzweil, CEO of Kurzweil Technologies, to supply digital
content for K-NFB Reading Technology, a newly developed e-book reading
software created by Kurzweil in collaboration with the National Federation
of the Blind. The software will be offered to consumers for free. B&T
unveiled the software at the Frankfurt Book Fair with plans to launch the
new reader in the U.S. at the end of November.

Although Kurzweil is a pioneer in creating technologies to assist the blind
with reading, his new and as yet unnamed software product is aimed at both
the general e-book reading market as well as the blind. In a phone
interview with Kurzweil from his company's headquarters in Massachusetts, he
said not only can consumers use the software to read e-books, but the
technology will allow the device its installed on to read the text aloud, in
synch with a display of the text that highlights each word as it is spoken.
On top of all that, he intends to offer the software for free via both
downloads and CDs and told PW he expects to make money through the sale of
books using the K-NFB e-reader. The software also offers high quality
graphics and fonts and will even read plays aloud using different voices for
different roles.

The Text to Speech function has been controversial and Kurzweil acknowledged
that, "there are a small number of publishers who feel that TTS will compete
with their audio books. For blind and dyslexic users they have a right to
use TTS to gain equal access to print information. We believe this issue
will be resolved soon in favor of universal TTS."

"Our partnership with K-NFB Reading Technology is an exciting development in
our strategy to work with best-in-breed digital media innovators to deliver
the content that our customers and their end-users want," said Tom Morgan,
chairman and CEO of Baker & Taylor. "K-NFB's new e-reader will certainly
make waves in the industry."

Kurzweil said consumers can buy e-books directly through the application and
he said that there will be "a full featured online store including metadata,
advanced search features, inference engine and more." He also said the
coventure will work with major retailers and allow the software to be
branded with their corporate identity. Kurzweil said the venture will offer
access to a "million" public domain titles and a "million" for-pay books. "A
number of first tier publishers signed up today on the first day of the
Frankfurt Book Fair," he said. "We take in books from different publishers
in a variety of formats and convert it to our own format," said Kurzweil.

Kurzweil explained that the K-NFB e-reader software will run on laptops and
desktop computers (PCs and Macs) as well as netbooks and mobile
phones-Windows mobile and the iPhone right away with other mobile phone
operating systems added as quickly as possible. The software can read any
format from straight text to PDF and ePub.

He also described the new e-reader as, "the ultimate expression of my work
over the years. It will have wide distribution and will be available not
only to the general reader and to the blind, but to the millions of people
who suffer from Dyslexia."

Hi gang. I thought the following press release might be of interest:

Orbit Research Introduces iBill Talking Banknote Identifier

Priced at $99, the iBill is a breakthrough in independent living for the
blind and visually impaired
WILMINGTON, Del., Oct. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Orbit Research today announced
the introduction of the iBill, the world's first affordable Talking
Banknote Identifier for the blind and the visually impaired. Priced at
$99, the 1.5 ounce, pager-sized iBill represents a breakthrough in
enabling the blind and the visually impaired community achieve
independence in the everyday necessity of using paper currency, which
sighted people take for granted. At about a third of the cost of
existing devices, the iBill offers unrivaled features, ease of use and
accuracy of identification.

The iBill is an exceptionally convenient and affordable solution that
can be used by each and every blind or visually impaired individual.
Measuring just 3 inches by 1.6 inches by 0.7 inches, the ultra-slim and
compact "key-fob" design provides the ultimate in convenience, allowing
it to be carried unobtrusively in a pocket, purse, clipped to the belt
or attached to a keychain or lanyard. Among the features that set it
apart from other such devices are the extremely high accuracy (better
than 99.9%) and the near-instantaneous speed (less than one second in
most cases) with which it identifies banknotes.

The iBill is designed with the sole purpose of providing the simplest,
fastest and most accurate means to identify U.S. banknotes. Its unique
ergonomic design permits easy and intuitive use without the need for any
training or practice. Upon insertion of a banknote into the device, its
denomination is identified at the press of a button. Based on the user's
preference, the denomination is announced by a clear and natural voice,
or by tone or vibration for privacy. The unit identifies all U.S.
banknotes in circulation and recognizes them in any orientation.
Banknotes in poor physical condition are indicated as unidentifiable and
are not misread. The unit is also upgradeable to recognize new banknote
designs.

The iBill achieves all of this while operating on a single, commonly
available AAA battery which lasts for over a year with typical use. Its
durable construction and sealed design ensure trouble-free use. The unit
is backed by a one-year warranty from Orbit Research, and toll-free
customer support.

"Orbit Research has once again demonstrated its commitment to the
development of breakthrough technology and products that make a direct
and measurably positive impact to the daily lives of the community we
serve," said Michael Nolan, President of Orbit Research.

Orbit Research has filed patents on the technologies employed in the
iBill, which enable its groundbreaking compactness, performance and
features.

Samples of the iBill are available for evaluation now and Orbit Research
is accepting orders.

Specializing in the development and manufacture of products for people
with disabilities, Orbit Research's mission is to employ cutting-edge
technology to develop innovative and affordable products that are
essential for an independent and productive lifestyle.

This weeks Innovations is full of amazing "first-timers"... We will be
having an interview with one of the organisers and team members of the
Driving for the Blind project at Virginia Tech college, we will have a talk
about radio data bases, and get this - a new technology for broadcasting!
How can multiple people broadcast over the internet or even the radio from
different studios in different continents, and both send music in glorious
stereo quality with minimal latency? Yes it is possible, we have done it,
and we'll show you how. And the highlight of our show - a very special
announcement about new and amazing services for our station, something
you've all been waiting for.
This all happens on Innovations, which first airs on Tuesday at 17UTC,
that's 1pm US Eastern, 10am US pacific, and 7pm in Central Europe only on
the Global Voice
www.theglobalvoice.info
Check the schedule for repeat times in your time zone.
So join Chrissie Cochrane for a program I know you will not want to miss,
the most innovative segment of Innovations yet, only on The Global Voice.
Sincerely,
Naama Erez
Executive producer
The Global Voice

sighted communities see eye to eye.

TV Guide

BlindBargains.com <http://www.blindbargains.com> has found possibly the
simplest interface for TV listings and it's from an unexpected source.
Often times, wireless interfaces to websites are more usable and slimmed
down, making them easier to navigate. Try this link to TV Guide's
wireless portal, and obtain a list of what's currently on for your cable
or satellite provider in a few seconds. The listings are completely
uncluttered, with just the channel number, name, and the current show.

Click this link to visit the wireless version of TV-Guide's TV listings:
http://wireless.tvguide.com <http://wireless.tvguide.com>.

Epguides

Epguides is a website where you can quickly lookup TV show episode
titles and air dates. The site currently has episode lists for over 4100
TV shows. You can search and browse them alphabetically, sort them by
year, check out currently running shows and view a current and fall US
TV schedule grid.

Additionally you can subscribe to newly added shows, recently canceled
shows (US only) and recently released US and UK TV DVDs, and get updates
on your feed reader using RSS.

Click this link to visit http://www.epguides.com <http://www.epguides.com>.

LocateTV

LocateTV is a quick search engine for TV listings, in particular for TV
shows and Movies. Find out when your favorite shows or movies are shown
on TV, see whether they are available online (both free and paid), and
view where you can get them on DVD.

Click this link to visit http://www.locatetv.com <http://www.locatetv.com>.

RerunCheck Notifies You if Your Favorite Show is a Repeat

RerunCheck saves you from the time and frustration of setting aside time
for live television, only to say: Wait a second, I've seen that before,
man, it's a rerun.

RerunCheck is a very straightforward search, having you type or grab a
show name from a list of popular entries. RerunCheck tells you if the
next airtime of that show is a rerun or not via email and RSS
notifications, and without setting up an account. The only additional
feature account registration seems to add is the ability to manage the
two types of notifications, although if you use RSS ,all you need to do
to manage things is delete the feed when you don't want it anymore.

Click this link to use http://reruncheck.com <http://reruncheck.com>.

that you never forget to check your favorite websites. ezRSS offers to
extend the convenience of RSS to your TV life by allowing you to either
receive a notification the day a new episode of your favorite show is
aired or to actually download the latest episode using bittorrent
technology. No sign up is required, just go to ezRSS.com
<http://www.ezRSS.com> and search through the extensive alphabetized
list of TV shows until you find your favorites, check the boxes next to
them and then click "create feed". Nothing else is required, just sit
back and relax with the knowledge that you will never have to miss an
episode of your favorite programs again.

By using bittorrent, the download of the most recent episode of your
favorite episode automatically starts as soon as a new episode is
available. This is known as broadcatching.

This is quite possibly the easiest and most accessible way to be
reminded about when the next episode of your favorite show is going to
air. People will love the simplicity, the extensive selection and the
ability to request shows that aren't currently listed.

Finding Independent Coffee Houses
<http://feedproxy.google.com/%7Er/FredsHeadCompanion/%7E3/MaRIkRmdBeM/finding-independent-coffee-houses.html>

One of the things I've learned from my blind and visually impaired
friends on Twitter is how many of us love our coffee. I'm not talking
about getting up in the morning and making a fresh cup or two, I'm
talking about getting out and traveling to a local coffee shop and and
enjoying some really fresh coffee.

Now, don't get me wrong, nothing's better than brewing your own coffee
at home with fresh roasted coffee beans… but sometimes you want to get
out of the house, or you're on the road, or maybe you're meeting up with
a friend and need to find a good, quality coffee house to visit.

Finding one can be difficult, especially when you can't read the window
signs or look down the street to see what's offered. Delocator.net is a
website that can help you find local coffee shops. Simply pull up the
Web site, enter in a zip code and choose 'coffee' from the drop-down
menu (the site started out focusing solely on coffee but now also offers
search for books, movies, music and organic food).

Not only is it important to support small businesses found in the
Delocator, but you may also find that a lot of these coffee houses use
fresher beans and are more dedicated to maintaining high quality, giving
you a better tasting coffee or espresso-based drink (they almost have to
be, to compete with the big guys).
